This morning, the Hanoi City People's committe had a meeting with Steering Board of walking space in Hoan Kiem Lake area and its vicinity to hear the statement of operations since the beginning of September.

The experiment of walking space around Hoan Kiem Lake and vicinity started on 1st September 2016 and is expected to last until the end of 2016. In order to serve the people, the city has installed 7 automatic water selling machines; 6 booths showcasing souvenirs, handicrafts; a car selling drinks and 27 free wifi stations

According to the Steering board, after 4 months of experiment, the walking area has attracted domestic and foreign tourists, gradually restricted motorized vehicles, contributing to promote the image of Hanoi - City for Peace.

Specifically, the amount of domestic and foreign tourists, local people in the capital to visit and participate in activities in the waling area during the day reached average flow of 3000 to 5000 people, the evening about 15000 people to 20000 people.

International visitors and overseas Vietnamese to stay in Hoan Kiem district increased quickly, reaching nearly 1.4 million, an increase of 13.7% over the same period in 2015.

However, besides the results achieved, there are still some limitations such as the lack of parking space for vehicles on Saturday evenings or holidays, thus arising the problem of illegal parking places, overcharging in the areas Hang Hanh Street, Lo Su Street intersection, some on the Hai Ba Trung and Ba Trieu streets...some people, agencies parked the cars on the road, motorcycles on the sidewalk and behind security fences.

After listening to the report of the Steering board and other comments, Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung said that the pilot project to organize walking space at Hoan Kiem Lake and its vicinity is the right decision to make cultural and entertaining space for people. Accordingly, the head of the city administration said that Hanoi will continue to experiment the waling area from 1st January to 30th June 2017. This plan is aimed to assess the impact of hot weather during summer time on the waling space.

Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee also pointed that on the holidays during the experimental project, Hanoi will organize walking streets in which directions. Especially on the occasions of 30th April and 1st May, if not on weekends Hanoi will organize walking streets. In the upcoming Lunar New Year, Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee decided not to organize walking areas around Hoan Kiem Lake area.

Tet lasts long, people go home and streets are deserted, moreover on New Year's eve all cars and motorbikes are forbidden that makes the walking space, so I think we are not going to organized walking streets during Tet, said Chung.

Prepare for a wonderful trip to northwest

Spectacular scenery, peaceful hill tribe villages, magical rice terraces, smiling faces...all combine to make northwest Vietnam an attractive region. Travel northwest Vietnam in a wonderful loop from Hanoi to Yen Bai, continue to Bac Ha, up to Sapa, further to Lai Chau and Dien Bien Phu, cross Pha Din pass to Son La, down to the valley of Mai Chau and back to Hanoi for a full circle. Northwest Vietnam is most beautiful in Spring with Peach, Plum blossoming all the forest and mountain, the sounds of bird singing, flute coupled with passionate cups of wine make the Northwest bustling, brilliant. In addition to sightseeing, the northwest also offers you the unique highland culture.

Best time to visit the northwest
Northwest Vietnam adventure travel
Northwest Vietnam adventure travel
Each season northwest has it's own charming, however there are 2 seasons the northwest region is most beautiful is Spring and Autumn, Spring time is from January to February on lunar calendar, this time all kinds of flower blossom and it is in this time ethnic minority groups in the northwest open their festivals with many activities such as singing, dancing...
October is Autumn in the northwest, the rice terraces shine a picturesque yellow. Autumn sunshine in the northwest is bolder than other regions. The weekend markets usually take place on Saturdays or Sundays, it's a chance for you to have more memorable experiences, the sounds and colors of hill tribe markets is something travelers cannot ignore.
If your time is limited you can follow the route Hanoi - Mai Chau - Moc Chau - Son La, if you have more than 7 days you can take an itinerary from Hanoi - Yen Bai - Thac Ba lake - Mu Cang Chai - Bac Ha - Sapa - Lai Chau - Dien Bien Phu - Son La - Moc Chau - Mai Chau and then back to Hanoi. This itinerary is strongly recommended as it brings you unforgettable experiences in the whole northwest area.

Transports:
As a base, there are many public buses to northwestern provinces, however if you travel by bus you can visit the town centres while the most impressive part of the trip is the journeys between destinations, you will miss most of the beautiful places as the buses only travel on the main roads, away from inhabited areas where the villages are located. The best way to travel norttwest is by car or motorbike, you can keep the cost down by traveling with friends or rent a private car for the whole trip.

If traveling by motorbike remember to make sure that your bike is in good condition, check the fuel, brake, engine carefully before the trip, note that there are few petrol stations in remote areas and you need to fill the tank anytime you see arrive at a place.

If traveling by car, you should not go more than 60 km / h while driving uphill. Best speed is 40-50 km / h, you can just might admire the scenery and ensure safety. For motorcycles, the speed should be kept from 30-40 km / h when up and down the pass. Every time getting on top of the pass you need to take a few minutes break before going down. Every day should not exceed 200 km. The last days will be more tired. Driving about 150 km and stop for overnight stay is the best. Travel northwest needs leisure to enjoy the scenery, discover life.

Every day should depart from early morning when your mind is fresh, excited, have enough time to get to the next destination, have accommodation before dark. Don't cross the mountain pass when it is dark or twilight, this is extremely important, to avoid the risks and ensure safety.

Sleeping and eating
In the northwest, there is a small town almost every 50km, there are motels and guesthouses in these places however mostly basic and restricted facilities. We recommend that you calculate your itinerary to get to the centre of town on time, and you can always refer local people for accommodation, hotels in northwest Vietnam of high standard are usually in big town or tourist centres such as Sapa, Dien Bien, Son La, in small town you can stay at motels or state guesthouses, another choice for backpackers is homestay in the village, this is a good way when you budget is tight, however remember that in some areas foreign travelers need to apply for permit to stay the night in the village.

Most motels and guesthouses are located in the central areas or near the market, it is also easy to find food and take a walk in the evening. Travelers can have a room at a guesthouse for about 200.000 Vietnam Dong (9 usd), the rooms are equipped with basic facilities such as air conditioner, en suite bathroom with hot water. It's a good idea to check the room before you pay.

There are not many choices for restaurant to eat in the northwest, especially when you are out of town, if you find a restaurant on the way just stop to eat, don't be too picky and wait or you will be hungry. Most restaurants have a few customers and the food is not always ready, only when you come and order they will cook for you, don't hesitate at a poor-looking restaurant, just ask what you want and you will have a good meal before continuing the trip.

Local specialties in the northwest is tofu in tomato sauce, beef with garlic, vegetables with pickles, these dishes are popular and they are fresh. In Moc Chau some restaurant also serve river fish, from Son La to Dien Bien you can try sour bamboo shoots or salty fried chicken...

Dong Cao highland, top destination in Bac Giang

Located at the east end of Bac Giang province and adjacent to Lang Son. Son Dong is a mountainous district with many ethnic groups. It is a good idea to learn about ethnic culture

Dong Cao highland
Dong Cao highland
From Ha Noi you can travel along the new Highway 1A to Lang Son province. Arriving in Bac Giang town you turn left at Ke intersection to national way 31, continue the way about 90km to the centre of Thach Son commune, from here you can ask local people for the way to Dong Cao.

One thing is the way from the center of the commune to Dong Cao is quite difficult to drive and on rainy days it is extremely difficult to go. You’d better prepare a good pair of walking shoes, some people had to walk all the way.

Dong Cao is the destination between the valley covered by haze almost throughout the year, the mountains overlapping in the distance, sometimes a little house built with mud or earth situated on the hillside, but it’s quite fun to come here. Last time when I was here there were no electricity as Son Dong is the poorest district in Bac Giang, therefore remember to charge your phone or camera battery full before coming to Dong Cao, otherwise you need to go to the district town to have it recharged.

Travel to Dong Cao, you need just 2 days and 1 night is enough, but remember that you need to bring along a camp to stay overnight, a light blanket is also handy although summer climate in this area is pretty cool in the day time and a bit cold at night, you don’t need to bring firewood as you can buy here from local people. The best thing to do in Dong Cao is perhaps taking photo of sunset, don’t miss it.

A vast land with big and small blocks of stone all look very catchy, the stone blocks stand next to each other with different shapes and sizes. This destination is not known to many people but very fascinating. Come on now, let’s set up the program, Dong Cao is the place you can visit all year round but summer will be the most beautiful time.

Special hill tribe markets in north Vietnam travelers cannot miss

Those who have visited the hill tribe markets in northern mountainous region of Vietnam would never forget the special impressions of the markets in the area.

hill tribe market in Vietnam
hill tribe market in Vietnam
For a very long time, the weekly markets of ethnic minority groups in northwest Vietnam have become an indispensable activity in the life of ethnic peoples. Besides trading the market is also a cultural activity for the ethnic groups.

Almost every district has a market day on a specified date of the month (on the lunar calendar) such as Quang Uyen market on 1st, 6th, 11th, 16th...Lung Phin market on the dates of the Tiger and the Monkey. Each time when the market day comes the streams of people from villages in the mountains and valleys flock to the market and make it a bustling place. The markets in the highlands have become the lifestyle of local people.

Coming to a district visitors would feel the special of each market, such as the colorful brocade clothes of H'mong people in Ha Giang, the iron knives and agricultural tools in Cao Bang markets or the buffaloes and dogs in Mu Cang Chai. Joining the market-goers one would feel the beauty and attractions hidden behind, it's not prominent and sophisticated but simple and rustic. Goods at the markets are the labor and hardworking products of highland people. Furthermore, these products also reflect the "breath of life", the traditional culture of each ethnic group, such as working tools (knives, hoes in Quang Uyen), traditional musical instruments (H'mong flutes)...

People go to market with different purposes, to buy and sell products, to meet friends...All have made a particular beauty of the hill tribe markets. Young girls wear the traditional colorful costumes with charming smiles on their faces, the H'mong boys play music and dance, many of them have become husbands and wives from the markets, they fell in love from the sounds of music and dances and the market days have become an expected time for young people.

In the old days when the traffic was difficult, people went to market on horseback or on foot, many had to walk overnight to go to market, people came to buy food for the whole week, now everything is much easier, from road condition, transportation and food, people can go shopping at cities but never miss a weekend market.

As the quality of life improves, the weekend markets also change, but the traditional beauty, the cultural identity of all ethnic groups are still very well preserved in the markets.
Some special hill tribe markets in north Vietnam travelers cannot miss:

Can Cau market in Si Ma Cai
Located about 100 km from Lao Cai city, the narrow road is not easy to go with sharp curves and steep slopes. But it is the hard way that makes visitors more excited. Most people to Can Cau market are Flower H'mong and Dzay. Can Cau market opens on Saturday mornings. From early morning crowds of people in colorful clothes hurry to the bustling market by all means of transport, along with them are herds of cows, buffaloes, dogs...Although Can Cau is not as famous as the nearby Bac Ha market it still retains the characteristics of an authentic hill tribe market, not as touristy as the market in Bac Ha. Visitors to Can Cau market will also have a chance to enjoy local dishes such as Thang Co soup, Pho with different taste.

Muong Hum market in Lao Cai
Muong Hum market opens on Sunday every week. This is the busiest day in the mountainous district Bat Xat of Lao Cai province, the market is located in a small valley just beside a stream, surrounded by sheer mountains, the Sunday market is a place to meet, exchange and purchase goods as well as a festival for ethnic people from Ha Nhi, H'mong, Dzay, Red Dzao...On market day the most attractive sight is the ground beside the stream where the horses are waiting with the hair of all colors, every now and then the neighing sounds can be heard all over the place making the painting of mountains and forest more lively, the stone bridges are busy with people walking up and down with horses. Inside the market is very noisy, the young boys and girls come here not only for trading but also to have fun, find partners and everyone wear their most beautiful clothes. Goods are displayed on the sheets of cloth on the ground, in the plastic bags or in the rattan baskets.

Dao San market in Lai Chau
Dao San market is in Phong Tho district, about 60 km from Lai Chau town. Dao San market comes every six days, the market is located at an elevation of 1500m, this is a typical highland market in Lai Chau and northwest Vietnam. From dawn, on the paths hidden in the mist are the sounds of footsteps, horses and motorbikes, the mountains seem awake with groups of young people from Ha Nhi, Dzao, Black Thai, H'mong all heading to the market. Dao San is not merely a market where people buy and sell products from the forests as well as traditional crafts...The special thing in this market is the "market culture", this is where the cultural values of ethnic groups reveal, people go to market like in a festival or New Year, visitors can see H'mong boys walking by a horse with a flute on one hand and a radio set on the other hand, singing the folk songs in H'mong language and perform a flute dance, the Dzao women with their babies on the back walking and weaving brocade at the same time. Coming to Dao San market visitors can also admire the beauty of the mountains and forests, sparkling waterfalls, terraced rice fields, streams, suspension bridges, villages hidden in the cloud along the winding mountain road.

Tra Linh market in Cao Bang
Tra Linh market is located in Hung Quoc township, Cao Bang province. Tra Linh market opens every five days on 4th, 9th, 14th, 19th, 24th and 29th of lunar months, the market is held on a large open ground in Hung Quoc commune. Tra Linh market is divided into three zones, one to sell local produce such as brocade, embroidery, clothes, vegetables, one zone to sell food and household tools and one zone for the cattle including cows, horses, this is really the unique feature of Tra Linh market.

On market day, from 4 am, around the paths, groups of people carrying goods and animals walking to market, each day about 60-70 buffaloes are sold, a male buffalo may cost 40 million Vietnam Dong (1800 US$) while a calf is worth 15-20 million VND, a beautiful female buffalo may cost up to 30 million. Tra Linh market attracts a lot of traders from other provinces, some of them come here to look for strong calves and train to be fighters to participate in buffalo fighting festivals, it is also where people exchange experience on how to choose and breed a buffalo, learn about market prices...Tra Linh market is a special cultural activity of ethnic people in the northern border areas.

Xin Man market in Ha Giang
Xin Man market is also known as Coc Pai market, for a long time Xin Man market has become an indispensable cultural activity of H'mong people in Ha Giang. The market is located right in the centre of town and is held every Sunday morning. Perhaps the most interesting thing after a long and dangerous journey to Xin Man is the food zone with unique dishes, what could be more enjoyable than to taste the pork barbecue by a cup of corn wine in the cool weather of a highland region!. Like other markets in the remote north, Xin Man market sells agricultural products such as corn, rice, soya bean grown by the hands of local people. The market is rather simple with the feeling of a remote place, some people come to market with a pig or dog in hand, some bring chili, pepper and roots, some come to market just to enjoy a bowl of Thang Co or a cup of corn wine...

Ta Sin Thang market in Tua Chua district, Dien Bien province
Ta Sin Thang market opens every six days on the dates of the Mouse and the Horse on lunar calendar, this is the place to exchange, trade goods, agricultural products of ethnic minorities in 5 communes of Tua Chua district. Ta Sin Thang market bears the typical features of ethnic minority groups in the northwest highland. The products for sale in the market are mostly local agricultural produce such as fruits, vegetables, young bamboo shoots, sweet potatoes, mushrooms, pigs, chickens...in addition there are traditional handicraft items like brocade, colored thread, dyes and other stuff made from very strong and beautiful fabrics. Like any other market in the northwest the pans of Thang Co soup can be seen at every corner and especially the famous Mong Pe wine made from corn. Besides the wine, Shan Tuyet tea is also a specialty of Ta Sin Thang market, this region is home to nearly 4000 ancient trees of Shan Tuyet tea, the cool climate makes the tea strong with very special taste.

Experience to travel Tam Coc in Vietnam

A few days ago some people asked me about experiences to travel Tam Coc area, my honor. I'm happy to share my own experience so that you can arrange a tour to Tam Coc by yourself without spending too much.

Tam Coc tour
Tam Coc tour
To enjoy full beauty of Tam Coc area I recommend that you spend 2 days instead of a day trip, it will be too rush as the drive from Hanoi to Tam Coc would cost you 3 hours each way (110 km), you can travel by private car, motorbike so that you can control your time, and if your budget is tight public bus is also a good choice, there are plenty of buses starting from Ben Xe Phia Nam bus station in Hanoi, fares is about 4 usd/person one way.

If you want to see the golden color of the rice fields then the period from the end of May to early June is best to visit Tam Coc and Ninh Binh. At that time the green color of vegetation coupled with yellow color of rice fields will make a wonderful picture with beautiful layers. After Lunar New year period you can admire the green fields stretching out to greet the spring breeze.

As mentioned  before the distance between Hanoi and Tam Coc is pretty close so you can go on a day trip. However, if you want to stay overnight to combine sightseeing spots outside the Tam Coc in Ninh Binh there are many hotels to choose from. The tourism industry in Tam Coc is pretty well developed so the accommodation facilities here are also handy to serve the needs of travelers. You can choose to stay at the affordable guesthouses around boat dock in Tam Coc, or if money is not your problem, the nearby Ninh Binh town also has good hotels 3 stars to 5 stars to choose. I myself have a good impression at Nam Hoa hotel, just a few minutes walk from tourist area, it has a large yard for parking, in the evening and morning someone will take car of your bikes, and the owner of the hotel Mrs Hoa is very friendly

Food and eating:
It is best to eat at the hotel you stay. As a habit most travelers tend to eat at a restaurant outside however in Tam Coc most restaurants are also associated with hotels, there are some choices around the boat dock such as Anh Dzung, The Long, Duc Tuan...

Specialty of Tam Coc and Ninh Binh is goat meat, especially grilled goat, the meat is crisp, thin fat very tasty. Tiet canh de (Goat blood pudding) is said very good but I don't like to drink the blood of animals. Com Chay (Burned rice) is another specialty of Ninh Binh (priced around 1 usd/boxe sold in the marketplace and in the restaurant is 2 usd a dish), but I don't like it as the oil is used many times. I felt the rice has burned fat smell and spicies are not tasty. In addition there are other delicacies that you can not ignore such as: Kim Son wine, eel soup, Yen Mac spring roll...

Tam Coc boat trip
Boat ride is the only way for you to visit Tam Coc. If traveling by road, you can just walk around outside. Ticket prices are 3.5 usd/person in 2 hours. In Tam Coc are the management of boats is very good, there are about 1500 boats of households. The boats are numbered and the families take turn to serve. I heard each boat goes two times in a month. Ah remember to have your tips ready as the boat rowers will ask for tip. While visiting Tam Coc, you should discuss this in advance with the boatman, if you want to stop to take pictures, or if you want to climb up high to find a good place to take picture of the beautiful scenery, with the experience and understanding of the place the boatman will be able to stop the boat and finding a convenient place, suitable for you to climb up the cliff. Don't stand up suddenly you will endanger yourself but also dangerous for those who go on the same boat.
Best time to do a boat ride is spring and summer as the rice on either side of the Ngo Dong river is yellow ripe. Ine summer there are often thunderstorms in Tam Coc and you should depart in the early morning. Because once you get there the weather is not too hot and most importantly avoid the rains that usually occur in the afternoon.

Souvenirs
As mentioned above, you should not buy Com Chay. You can buy some goat meat (16 usd/kg). Please always remember to ask the soy sauce and herbs as well. Goat meat is also sold live always at the hotel. If you go home via Ho Chi Minh highway you can buy sugar cane selling more on the way.

The neighborhood:

Lunar New Year for ethnic people in northwest Vietnam

Tet festival in the northwest
Tet festival in the northwest
It would be very interesting if you travel northwest Vietnam in Spring time, from January to March. Northwest of Vietnam is the home to many ethnic minorities like Hmong, Thai, Muong, etc.  It is not hard to believe that this remote highland can hold inside a widely diversified cultural background since each ethnic group here has its own customs. When referring to Tet in northwest Vietnam, these practices have made great contributions to create unique Tet that you can only experience on this land.

Hmong people in Hoa Binh
The Mong celebrate Tet one month earlier than the usual Tet in Vietnam. They also do not celebrate New Year’s turning moment like the majority of Vietnamese do. Instead, it is a tradition that New Year starts with the first rooster sound on the first day of Tet. On the previous night, people set up a full table of food and dedicate to their altar to worship the ancestors. After that, they have a big meal with wine and wait until hearing the first rooster sound.

Another interesting custom is: rather than making “Chung” cake like the Kinh, the Hmong make “Day” cake (a plain round sticky rice cake). They think that the round shape of the cake represents the moon and the sun, which are the origin of everything on earth. During Tet, these home-made cake will be used to treat the guests.

Tet amongst Hmong people are full of social activities, spiritual customs, and particularly traditional games like: horse racing, bird fighting, bow shooting, etc.

Muong people in Son La
To the Muong, Tet is the most important event of the year. On Tet, each family prepare a big meal to worship their ancestors and spiritual gods. A table often requires: Chung cake, honey, wine, sticky rice, boiled meat, some money, a bowl of water, betel and areca, salt. After setting up the table properly, the ritual will be established by a sorcerer. Finally, the family can have New Year’s meal.

Besides the food prepared for ritual purpose, the Muong’s meal usually has some additional local food and vegetable. A notable custom that is well practiced here is: before the meal, children in the family must line up and show their respect to the older by prostrating themselves before them. The old would then wish their chidren health and luck. After settling, people would offer wine to each other, and then start eating. To make the atmosphere warm and joyful, Muong people often sing along traditional songs during the meal.

Thai people in Lai Chau
From January 25th (according to local calendar), hotels in northwest Vietnam after finishing cleaning and decorating the house, Thai people will go to local markets to shop for Tet. Of many things they would buy, two sugarcane trees are compulsory. It is a custom that they bind the two trees in two side edges of the altar, which as the people think, would do as a stick connecting land and the sky, guiding their ancestors back to the sky for Tet.

In the early morning of 30th, Thai people would lit up their stoves to prepare the food welcoming New Year. The women will make sticky rice and cook food while the men will kill the pig and do initial procedures. At night, people gather around the cooking fire to wait for New Year’s turning moment. Drums and gongs spread out their cheerful melodies for an expecting New Year. When the clock strikes 12, people in the village will go to the brook to take some water. The tradition is that: if one uses the water from the source to drink and wash the face at the very first time of New and his family will be healthy and lucky for the rest of the year. This practice must be done before the first rooster sound signaling 1 o’clock.

Spectacular sights in Tam Coc

Known to travellers as ‘Halong Bay without the water’, ‘Halong Bay on the rice paddies’ and so on, Tam Coc tours breathtaking scenery. While Halong Bay (see the North-east Vietnam chapter) features huge rock formations jutting out of the sea, Tam Coc has them jutting out of its rice paddies. Some travellers will notice a striking resemblance here to Guilin and Yangshuo in China.

Boat trip in Tam Coc
Boat trip in Tam Coc
Tam Coc means ‘Three Caves’, Hang Ca, the first cave, is 127m long; Hang Giua, the second, is 70m long; the third and smallest, Hang Cuoi, is only 40m. The best way to see Tam Coc day trips is by rowboat on the Ngo Dong River. The boats are rowed into the caves, and this is a very peaceful and scenic trip. The boat trip to all tree caves takes about two hours and tickets are sold at the small booking office by the docks. A boat costs 55,000d including the entry fee, and seats two passengers. Even on cloudy days, bring sunscreen and a hat or umbrella – there’s no shade in the boats. You can rent an umbrella at the pier.

You may find you need a healthy dose of patience and good humor at Tam Coc tours in Ninh Binh; if you’re prepared for a bit of a hassle then it won’t seem so irritating. One reported problem is that boat owners ask you almost constantly to buy embroidery – if you don’t want any, they will ‘suggest’ (rather strongly) that you buy a Coke for the person rowing your boat. Many travellers do this and then later find that the oarsperson simply sells the Coke back to the drink vendors for half the price.

The area behind the Tam Coc restaurants is Van Lanvillage, which is famous for it embroidery. Here you can watch the local artisans make napkins, tablecloths, pillowcases and T-shirts. A lot of these items wind up being sold on Hanoi’s Pho Hang Gai, but it’s cheaper to buy them here directly from the artisan. The village has as better selection and slightly lower prices than those available from the boat vendors.

Getting There & Away
Tam Coc is 9km southwest of Ninh Binh. Follow Hwy 1 south and turn west at the Tam Coc turn-off. Budget cafes in Hanoi book day trips to tour Tam Coc; the fast-food version goes for about US$12, or it’s closer to US$20 with a smaller group, comfortable vehicle and professional guide, Ninh Binh hotels also run day tours, and rent motorbikes and bicycles if you’re staying in town and want to make your own way there.

Hoa Lu
The scenery here resembles nearby Tam Coc, though Hoa Lu has an interesting historical twist. Hoa Lu was the capital of Vietnam during the Dinh (968-80) and early Le (980-1009) dynasties. The site was a suitable choice for capital city de to its proximity to China and the natural protection afforded by the region’s bizarre landscape.

The ancient citadel of Hoa Lu (admission 30,000d), most of which has been destroyed, covered an area of about 3 sq km. The outer ramparts encompassed temples, shrines and the king’s palace. The royal family lived in the inner citadel.

Yen Ngua mountain provides a scenic backdrop for Hoa Lu’s two remaining temples. The first temple, Dinh Tien Hoang, was restored in the 17th century and is dedicated to the Dinh dynasty. Out the front is the stone pedestal of a royal throne; inside are bronze bells and a statue of emperor Dinh Tien Hoang with his three sons. The second temple, Le Dai Hanh (or Duong Van Nga), commemorates the rulers of the early Le dynasty. Inside the main hall are an assortment of drums, gongs, incense burners, candle holders and weapons. On the hillside above the temples is the tomb of Dinh Tien Hoang. It’s a good climb up 207 steps, but your efforts will rewarded with great views.

In 1998, archaeologists unearthed a ‘new’ section of the old citadel, which has been dated to the 10th century. This, and some associated artifacts, have been preserved on site and are on show in a display room built around them.

There are guides at the temples who work for free (offer a tip if you use their services) or you can wander around alone. Once you’ve got through the hassle of persistent sellers on the way in, it’s very peaceful inside the complex, especially in the late afternoon when you miss the crowds.

Getting There & Away
Hoa Lu is 12km north of Ninh Binh. There is no public transport, so most travellers get there by bicycles 9US$1 per day from Ninh Binh), motorbike or car.

Venture to Ninh Binh for a short excursion

Boat trip in Tam Coc
Boat trip in Tam Coc
Boat trips - Tam Coc, Trang An, Thung Nang - Ninh Binh
A leisurely row boat trip through the stunning Ninh Binh countryside - its rice paddies, karst mountains and cave formations - is a definite highlight of a visit. ?? Tam Coc tours is the original boat trip destination and continues to be the favourite with tour groups. Travellers now have two extra options that are less busy and equally enjoyable.

Boats usually wait for a group of four to assemble and then set off with a local woman rowing. If you’re happy to pay more, you can have a private boat. Tipping boat ladies is recommended. The excursion usually runs for around 2 hours.

Cuc Phuong National Park
Cuc Phuong National Park is located 45km from Ninh Binh so it’s an easy day trip if time permits. Some travellers make the day trip from Hanoi. That’s far more arduous and groups arrive in the heat of the day and leave before things start to cool off. Not ideal.

Cuc Phuong is much better visited from Ninh Binh and will be of most value for nature lovers, travellers with a strong interest in its Endangered Primate Rescue Centre or, at the right times of year, bird watching. While the park features lots of lush, tropical forest, it’s not an essential inclusion for travellers in a hurry or those with only a casual interest.

The Endangered Primate Centre was established in 1993 to rescue primates from hunters and also rehabilitate endangered species. It’s a great place to see endangered gibbons, langurs and other primates close up. It’s located near the main entrance to the park.

Treks through the park range from very easy, to far longer and more demanding. The park’s ancient trees and caves used by prehistoric inhabitants of the area are accessible on the less demanding treks.

Hang Mua
It’s a fair climb up hundreds of steps but the views from Hang Mua over Ninh Binh’s stunning countryside are well worth the effort. Best visited in the early morning or late afternoon. Hang Mua is easily accessed while cycling in the area.

Hoa Lu
Hoa Lu’s historic offerings are less memorable than the stunning countryside in which they sit. Remnants of the original capital are modest. Instead, travellers can visit two atmospheric 17th century temples. The more impressive is dedicated to Emperor Dinh Tien Hoang, who established the capital at Hoa Lu. After his murder, Le Dai Hanh established control and the shortlived Le dynasty began. The second temple honours Le Dai Hanh.
Hoa Lu was considered a safer location from Chinese invaders with the limestone mountains providing good surveillance as well as barriers against invaders.

Cycling
The main sights around Ninh Binh town - Tam Coc, Trang An, Hoa Lu, Hang Mua and Bich Dong Pagoda are all easily reached by bike. Ideally you’ll leave the main roads and travel between places along picturesque country lanes. A guide can be very helpful in locating the best of these. Hotel maps tend to be confusing.

A day on your bike visiting all the main sites may see you cover 30 - 40kms on mostly flat terrain.
Most bikes for hire tend to be pretty ordinary but the cycling conditions aren’t terribly challenging either. If you want a better quality bike, check out the Thuy Anh Hotel in Ninh Binh town (55A Truong Han Sieu St, Ninh Binh). They’ve recently purchased some better quality bikes and rent them out for US$5 per day.

Bich Dong Pagoda
Bich Dong Pagoda is a short ride from Tam Coc and Thung Nang. It’s one of Vietnam’s most historic pagodas however constant renovation and rebuilding has drained it of much of its atmosphere. It’s worth stopping by because you’re in the area but the shiny newness of much of the complex is at odds with its rich past. Visitors are encouraged to dress modestly.

Colorful ethnic minorities and landscape of Ha Giang

Ha Giang province in northern Vietnam is the less frequented by tourists. Ha Giang is the place where almost 90% of the population are ethnic minorities with their culture and lifes in north west Vietnam tours. The last 20 years when the other Vietnam provinces and cities experienced the economic development, Ha Giang was the place, which had been forgotten in time. The main reason was the political situation and relations with China.

The Chinese invasion of 1979 has been forgotten and the Vietnamese Government has financially helped with the construction of the new roads and infrastructure, and there are also some modest hotels. In Ha Giang town you will find any hotels and accommodation as well as homestay. If you continue to Dong Van and Meo Vac, accommodation deals are shrinking. The attendance of Vietnamese tourists gradually increasing, but also some foreign tourists are coming here.

Ha Giang heaven gate
Ha Giang heaven gate
Starting with hills, valleys and villages with the ethnic minorities residents (Hmong, Tay, Dao, Nung, Lo Lo, Giay, Pu Peo). The farthest and the most beautiful place of Ha Giang province is Dong Van Karst Global Geopark, designated by UNESCO as one of 77 sites with the important geological and cultural heritage. This geopark is littered with the ethereal karst formations that are nearly 400 million years old, and has two protected areas.

Ethnic minorities creates a unique and rich cultural heritage of the area. Traditional practices and habits of these ethnic groups are very diverse and interesting and they attract many travellers to explore these unique aspects. Northern most place of northwest Vietnam tour is the village Lung Cu with the Vietnamese flag on the Dragon mountain. Lung Cu is known for many special foods and beverages. You can taste the alcohol from honey and corn, or Thang Co soup, which is cooked from every part of the animal.

You can go to Meo Vac town from the Dong Van town , through the mountainous area with altitude of 1500 meters. This area is one of the most beautiful that you can see in the Ha Giang province. If you manage a time to visit this city on Sunday, you can go to the Sunday Market, which takes place outside the city.
There is also Khau Vai „Love market“ 20 km from the city center. People from the ethnic minority Hmong, Tay and Lo Lo are coming here and seeking a life partner or they are changing the partner. This market is held once a year 27.day third month of the lunar calendar. Watch the video from the "Love Market".

Meo Vac town in the province of Ha Giang is an ideal place to visit the Sunday market, where ethnic residents sell mostly an cattle. They sell also dogs, goats, pigs. This market is not just a selling point, but also in terms of maintaining social relations of ethnic people. Ethnic residents (Mong, Tay) from distant areas around the town of Meo Vac will meet there. Some people go on foot at night with cattle for example 20 km. Market starts every Sunday since morning, most busy from 7-10 am and on the place you can taste local food and corn and rice alcohol.

On your way to the farest places of northern Vietnam – Dong Van and Meo Vac, visit the The Hmong king´s palace in Sa Phin. This unassuming palace is located along the road to Dong Van. However, it is very important for the local Hmong community. Residents of this area during the reign of Vuong Chinh Ð?c together with Ho Chi Minh and gained national freedom. The palace has been used as a residence and fortress during Vuong Dynasty. You can also learn something about the history of Ha Giang province.

If you stay for a while in Ha Giang town, you can visit a large freshwater Noong lake. The lake is 25 kilometers south of the city, in monsoon period may be 80 hectares large. Fascinating insight arises in the dry season, when the water depth decreases, in the lake are growing trees. Local fishermen from Ha Giang are catching fish and shrimp in the lake, and you can ask them for sailboat on the lake. It is no problem to go there with a motorbike.

After a few minutes drive from the city of Dong Van begins famous road and mountain pass – Ma Pi Leng Pass. It’s probably one of the most beautiful roads you can ride in Vietnam. History of the road falls to the period between 1959-1965, when thousands of young people from 17 ethnic groups built this way, the construction process took 11 months.

Initially, the road was only for walking or horse team, but later it was extended to cars and trucks. Hills and mountains creates here fantastic images and the roads are dangerous here, ride cautiously on a motorcycle .

Hoang Su Phi is less frequented area by tourists in the province of Ha Giang. But that does not mean it is not pretty. The entire area will pass huge areas of rice terraces, unspoilt nature and ethnic villages. If you stay for a few days in Ha Giang, this place is definitely worth a visit, but you need to take at least two days. Hoang Su Phi is about 70 km from the city (see map), but to get there through the winding road takes a lot of time.
